Electrodiagnostic Testing About Surgical Monitoring Associates ®

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is a clinical specialty that helps identify developing injury to the brain, spinal cord or other neural structures and pathways during surgery, so that immediate corrective action can be taken. Surgical Monitoring Associates Inc. (SMA) is a national leader in the practice of intraoperative neuromonitoring.

SMA's President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Daniel M. Schwartz, was a pioneer in the field of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and continues to be one of its most respected innovators. A founding member of the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM), Dr. Schwartz is among the most widely published surgical neurophysiologists in the world, with articles and book-chapters appearing in leading contemporary surgical journals and text-books.

Dr. Anthony K. Sestokas, SMA's Chief Clinical Officer, is also a highly published and respected surgical neurophysiologist. Dr. Sestokas serves on the Boards of both the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring and the American Board of Neurophysiological Monitoring for which he is an examiner for national board certification. With over 18 years experience in IONM, Dr. Sestokas is a nationally-recognized expert in the field.

SMA's surgical neurophysiologists are considered the most highly-educated and trained professionals in the IONM specialty, all having completed an extensive fellowship program in neuromonitoring. SMA employs more Board Certified surgical neurophysiologists than any group of its kind in the United States. Surgeons recognize SMA's neurophysiologists as integral members of their teams, and rely on their critical input to promote a positive surgical outcome.

Over the years, SMA clinicians have been responsible for developing several highly innovative monitoring techniques that help reduce the incidence of intraoperative neurologic complication. They have been recognized for these important contributions with awards of excellence from leading orthopedic and neurosurgical societies such as the Scoliosis Research Society, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
