Patient safety is the highest priority for SMA, just as it is for the hospital. SMA surgical neurophysiologists play a vital role in reducing the incidence of post-operative neurologic sequelae through early identification of emerging iatrogenic injury to the nervous system and facilitation of timely intervention. By reducing the incidence of neurologic complication from surgery, SMA neurophysiologists contribute substantially to cost savings for the hospital through reduced lengths of stay for patients, elimination of rehabilitation costs and avoidance of possible medical-legal involvement.
Clinical Staff Qualifications
The majority of SMA's surgical neurophysiologists hold advanced graduate academic degrees in the allied health or biological sciences, and have either obtained or are eligible for the only professional board certification (Diplomate of the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring, D.ABNM) in the specialty of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM). Our surgical neurophysiologists have all completed a comprehensive didactic fellowship training program, designed and taught by a dedicated Director of Education with over 20 years of IONM experience, and augmented by SMA’s board-certified clinical mentors.
Professional Certification
The Diplomate of the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring (D.ABNM) is the only professional board certification in IONM that attests to both technical competency in neuromonitoring and proficiency in the clinical interpretation of neuromonitoring data. To be eligible for professional certification, candidates must possess at least a Masters degree in a health science related field, have proof of at least 300 monitored cases, and must successfully complete both a written and oral examination. SMA is proud to employ more D.ABNM professional surgical neurophysiologists than any other group in the world.
By partnering with SMA, you will learn that our staff is truly superior. The presence of highly experienced neuromonitoring professionals in the operating room, providing truly real-time interpretation of data directly to the surgeon in accordance with strict guidelines and standards assures you of the best possible neuromonitoring care for your patients.
Remote Medical Consultation
Recognizing that some third party insurers require physician involvement for reimbursement, SMA has partnered with "Remote Neuromonitoring Physicians" (RNP) to provide supportive remote consultation as needed. Given that there are no medical training programs specializing in IONM, RNP is unique in requiring its physicians to complete a specialized fellowship training program through SMA to ensure that each physician has the necessary expertise to assist the clinician in the operating room. This highly specialized infrastructure for remote medical consultation provides yet another level of service to hospitals, surgeons and patients. SMA believes that with our core of world class surgical neurophysiologists and the added availability of expert remote consultants, we are indeed a cut above.
JCAHO
SMA represents that in addition to compliance with Hospital policies, our services will be rendered in accordance with the standards of the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations ("JCAHO").
